Applications are being accepted for the following positions at the Vancouver Board of Education:

Temporary Employee in the Material Services Division
The hourly wage is $25.69 plus 4% for yearly vacation.
Hours: 7.5 hours daily
Commence Date: Immediately

Only those who meet all requirements will be given consideration for this role.

On the ancient and unceded grounds of the Xmθkym (Musqueam), Swxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and Slilwta (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), we are honored to be learning and unlearning with much appreciation and respect.

It is our pride at the VSB to provide students outstanding educational opportunities. The VSB, a large urban school district, is among the most diverse educational systems in Canada, and fairness and inclusion are central to our educational philosophy.

Using evidence-informed approaches, putting students' needs first, and fostering connections, over 7,700 staff members across the District strive to provide learning environments where all children flourish. The cultural richness of our city is reflected in the VSB. Students at VSB come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences, and they are encouraged to discover and express their individuality and talents. Our dedication to children extends beyond the classroom; their general well-being and feeling of community are just as vital. As a school system, we aim to provide an environment where each student can be themselves and thrive throughout their educational journey. By using evidence to inform our choices, we promote accountability and equality in our work. We strive to continuously enhance student outcomes in service to students, their families, and the larger community as a learning organization, and humility serves as our compass. Visit our school district to learn more.

Casual laborers are needed for both seasonal and year-round work assignments in the VSB Material Services Department.

An inventory of general repair, operations, and maintenance materials for schools is managed by Material Services. Material Services is also in charge of labor, transportation, equipment loans, and furniture repairs.

Any VSB jobsite that falls within the purview of Material Services, Grounds Maintenance, or Maintenance and Construction may be given this role. Moving from one location to another throughout the workday may be necessary for employees. The chosen applicant will have to operate in a team setting with less direct supervision and sustain cooperative working relationships. In order to minimize disruptions to the learning environment, staff members must interact with students, school administrators, and other staff members. Every employee must adhere to WorkSafe B.C.'s regulations in order to work safely.

From the site buildings to the walkways, the Grounds Maintenance Department is in charge of constructing and maintaining all school board facilities. This covers all paved areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, fences, lawns and gardens, and subterranean utilities. Snow and heavy rains are examples of seasonal extremes that are included in year-round assistance programs.

The Maintenance & Construction Division performs a number of preventative maintenance tasks, such as major "overhaul" projects and repairs on school buildings to preserve the infrastructure and adhere to code specifications. It is not necessary for schools to seek such work; they are prearranged. Reroofing, painting, mechanical or electrical upgrades, yearly fire alarm testing, and routine safety inspections of buildings' and grounds' equipment are examples of preventive maintenance.

Examples of Tasks:

Material Services: transports and carries supplies to work areas; helps truck drivers load, unload, and deliver a variety of materials and equipment; moves and stores boxes, furniture, equipment, and tools; and organizes furniture as instructed.

Grounds Maintenance: helps truck drivers load, unload, and deliver various equipment and materials; helps the gardeners with ground maintenance, such as weeding; cuts and trims grass; mixes and pours concrete; installs posts; builds, maintains, repairs, and lays out sports fields and related fixtures and equipment; erects, assembles, maintains, repairs, and disassembles playground equipment; excavates trenches; installs pipes; breaks concrete; moves and removes sand; and performs demolition work.

Maintenance and Construction: Delivers, handles, and prepares task sites; helps journeymen with structural construction; carries and transports materials to work areas; breaks concrete; moves and removes sand; and does demolition work.

Essential Requirements:

Completion of the 12th grade
possess a class 5 driver's licenses
Capacity to meet the high physical demands of working in dusty and dirty environments, lifting and carrying heavy objects, working in confined spaces or at heights, working in a variety of postures, vibration and noise, dust and flying particles, and exposure to a range of weather conditions.
